Emelia Matthews- Modern Artist

Biography
IMG-1625.jpg

I am currently based in Southampton, England. I grew up in a small town in the south east of England that sits just outside of London; throughout my childhood I was subjected to different forms of art through my photographer dad and my teacher mum. I was taught from an early age how to paint, write poems and create anything I ever wanted to. Now at age 19 I mainly work with mediums such as clay, acrylic paint and different forms of photography. My passions and inspirations stem mostly from different feelings and the ways I view the world. I love projecting my own feelings through different artistic forms and creating pieces that make others think. My biggest achievements have been ones of a personal level, for example, learning a new craft and profiting off its success and individuality or even just small milestones in my university work where my creativity has developed into something more than I expected.

As a young artist that struggles with concentration and focus my preferred medium isn’t just one, I find it hard to have one favourite as my mind is always stimulated by other mediums that relate or could work well alongside the one I am trying to focus on. However there has always been a medium I find myself going back to more than the others, photography. For me photography is the way I capture my favourite memories and show my feelings. I have always felt as if I see the world in a different way to everyone else; as I feel like everything, I see is art and has so much meaning and to show other people this art that is everyday life, the easiest way is to take a photo of it. I love the art itself of photography, the denotation of still imagery that can then mirror and reflect a present moment, this love is influenced greatly by my brother and my dad as they are photographers themselves, I grew up constantly admiring my surroundings and always being told how the different sceneries we passed would be a “great picture”, and through them I have found a love for not just photography but film photography. I love how dated and frozen each moment is when shot with a film camera it just makes it feel a lot more special; with film photography I have developed a great relationship with the darkroom and a love especially for photograms – I find the way light can be used as almost a paintbrush so fascinating and affective to work with. As well as darkroom work, I am also very into photo manipulation whether it be digital or by hand I love adapting and juggling different aspects of each moment captured and created a whole new one altogether.
